Millard was born Jan 9th, 1933 in Spring Valley to Carl and Ingeborg (Gronne) Anderson. Millard grew up on the family farm in Gilman township. He attended the Lone Balsam one room school and then attended Spring Valley Schools until 9th grade-when he quit school to help on the family farm.

Millard married Darlene Helmer on August 10, 1956 at Oak Grove church in Prescott, WI. Together they were blessed with five children, sixteen grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. They made their living working hard on the farm, but his passions were cutting wood, clearing land, making maple syrup, and dancing (especially their famous hop polka).
