Gordon Grinley Obituary

Gordon Grinley, age 82 of Woodville, Wisconsin died Thursday, June 25, 2020 at his home in Eau Galle Township.

Funeral service will be on Tuesday, June 30, 2020 at Zion Lutheran Church, Woodville with visitation from 9:30 until 11 at church prior to the service.

Burial will be in Lone Pine Cemetery, Woodville.  A luncheon will follow in the church basement.

Gordon was born March 10, 1938, in St Paul, MN.  At the age of 4, he was adopted by parents Gilbert and Elizabeth (Betty) Grinley.

Gordon was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith at Zion Lutheran Church, Woodville, WI.  He graduated in 1956 from the Woodville High School.  He continued his education at Augsburg College.  In 1957, Gordon joined the United States Army where he served in Germany.  He was employed at West Publishing Company in St Paul, MN for 45 years.

Gordon was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Woodville, WI, a member of Zion Men’s Breakfast Bible Study, Joseph’s Square, and the weekly Zion Bible Study group.  He was also a member of the Woodville Historical Society and Book Club.

On June 16, 1962 he was united in marriage to Shirley Osborne of Woodville at Zion Lutheran, with Pastor Selmer Knutson officiating.  They were blessed with two children: a son Craig and daughter Kari.  Following their marriage they lived in St Paul, MN where Gordon was employed at West Publishing as a Pressroom Supervisor.  They bought a small bungalow in North Hudson, WI and a few years later built a new home in Stillwater, MN.  They moved to Woodville in 1973.

Gordon was on the West Softball Team and Bowling League.  He took many trophies in bowling tournaments.  After retirement he continued to bowl on the Wednesday Night Men’s League at Striker’s Lanes in Baldwin.  He was Cub Scout Master for Cub Scout Pack 110, Woodville; served as Sunday School Superintendent at Peace Lutheran Church, Baldwin; and also served on the Church Council.

Gordon had two large gardens and liked mowing his large lawn.  He enjoyed reading, was a fan of all sports and enjoyed watching all the games on TV.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers-in-law Clifford ‘Skip’ Larson and Allen Rydmark; and niece Alyssa Hagen.

He is survived by his wife Shirley of Woodville; two children: son Craig (Amy) Grinley of Ames, IA; daughter Kari (Ben) Nutting of Superior, WI; two grandchildren: Shane Grinley of Hudson, WI; Taylor Grinley of Ames, IA; sisters: Carole (Mrs. Clifford ‘Skip’ Larson), Woodville; Mary (Mrs. Allen Rydmark), Canby, OR; (close to heart) Leann Huston, Woodville; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral service is Tuesday, June 30, 2020, at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Woodville with visitation from 9:30 until 11 at church prior to the service.  Burial will be in Lone Pine Cemetery, Woodville with military honors by the Woodville American Legion.
