Harold Thompson, age 78, of Spring Valley, Wisconsin died Tuesday, November 10, 2020 at his home in Gilman Township after losing a decade long battle with prostate cancer.
Harold was born November 17, 1941 to Gerhard and Nora (Hurtgen) Thompson in Gilman Township, Pierce County, Wisconsin. He grew up on the farm and attended Spring Valley Schools, graduating with the Class of 1959. On October 12, 1961 Harold married Mary Wasson at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spring Valley. They were blessed with 4 children: Randal, Jeffrey, Frankie, and Deanna.
After graduating, Harold worked at the Spring Valley Dairy delivering milk to local schools and stores. Harold then served in the US National Guard for a 1 ½ years. Half of that service time was spent on active duty during the Berlin Crisis in 1961. After returning home from the Service, the Spring Valley Dairy was sold, and he then worked at the Smeads factory in River Falls for the next 7 years while also farming with his dad on the home farm which he purchased in the spring of 1964. He then went on to dairy farm full time in 1971. He continued to dairy farm with the help of his wife and family for the next 42 years before "retiring" in 2013 following the sale of his farm to his son Frank and grandson Mitchell. His life's desire had been fulfilled knowing the farm would continue to be a part of the family.
Harold spent most of his time working to keep his farm going. He did love taking trips to farm and cattle auctions in his free time. Showing his registered dairy herd at local shows also brought him much joy. He was a great neighbor to all, and would do anything he could to help others. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, friend, and servant to God.
