Karen 'Joy' Spindler

Joy Spindler, of Holladay, Utah died peacefully at home with her daughter, son-in-law and grand dog by her side. 

Joy was born in Spring Valley, Wisconsin to John and Alma taking her place in the lineup of the Stefon girls.  She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church.  Joy enjoyed all the things that come with growing up in a small town, roaming the countryside, spending time on the Helgeson farm, working at the drug store and the local theater. Her love of theater started as she directed the family Christmas pageant every year.  She graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1963.

Joy went on to attend the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, receiving a degree in English, Speech and Drama.  Carpooling to college is where she fell in love with her soulmate, Jim Spindler.  The two married in 1966, moved to Minnesota, where they welcomed their daughter, Stephanie.  Joy taught at Centennial High School, where directing the drama productions became her favorite responsibility. 

Jim’s work brought them to Utah in 1976.  This was a big change, moving away from family, but Joy quickly began growing her “Utah Family” of friends, who remained a big part of her life.  She was in her element as the happy hostess of many holiday gatherings and parties.  These get-togethers brought her so much delight throughout the years.

This move marked a career change, as Joy became the human resource/personnel manager at both Natter Manufacturing and Mark Steel Corporation. These jobs also added to her Utah family as a second mom, best friend, sister; you name it and she filled that role.  She had a genuine love and caring for people that was immediately evident and created many special bonds. 

Joy loved traveling with her family and friends. No place made her happier than sitting on a beach in Mexico or Hawaii listening to Jimmy Buffett.  She treasured her trips to Disneyland, even though she never could figure out how to read the map.  She had such a green thumb.  Working in her yard and gardening brought her so much pleasure. Joy loved attending plays with her daughter and friends.  Her exercise classes meant so much to her, not as much for the exercise, but as a social outing.  She always adored her pets. The highlight of her days was being a dog grandma.  She spent countless hours playing, throwing the ball, and spoiling Loca.

Joy will be missed by so many.  She truly lived up to her name, a spot of sunshine in the world.  She has a special place in the hearts of so many who will greatly miss her.  Joy is preceded in death by her husband, James, parents, John and Alma, siblings, Betty, John, and Roger, in-laws, Joseph and Mary Spindler, Clifford Helgeson, Allen Cady and Jerine Spindler.  She is survived by her daughter Stephanie (Brock) Varoz, sisters Elna Cady, Sandy (Dean) Madson, brother-in-law Tom (Elizabeth) Spindler, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. 

A celebration of life is at Starks Funeral Parlor in Salt Lake City, Utah, on June 17. Interment will be Saturday, July 11, 2026 at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Cemetery in Spring Valley, Wisconsin at 12:00 p.m.    A celebration of life will follow at the Brother Michael Center, S105 Sabin Avenue in Spring Valley, Wisconsin from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.   In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary or any local pet rescue.
