Terrance (Terry) Edward Shafer, of Spring Valley, WI, died unexpectedly on February 25, 2017, while on a weekend trip with his brothers.  Terry was born to Ivan and Dee Shafer on April 23, 1954.  He graduated from Spring Valley High School with the class of 1972.  After graduation he worked construction while attending school at night to become a master electrician.  He started Shafer Electric in the 1980s, grew the business to two locations and multiple employees, but more recently had downsized.  He enjoyed the challenges of various projects, loved helping people and being needed, loved helping the community, and loved telling stories.
Terry was united in marriage to Marsha Erickson on August 7, 1976.  Their marriage was blessed with three children, Chad, Kari, and Todd, but later dissolved.  Terry loved family and adored his 11 grandchildren.  He enjoyed having them help with projects, and his face lit up when he could make them smile.  The special person in Terry’s life for the past 22 years is Sue Gregg.
Terry was dedicated to helping others.  He joined the Spring Valley Fire Department in 1979 and was elected chief in 1986.  After 30 years as chief, he decided to step down at the end of 2016.  He was looking forward to staying an active firefighter and continuing to serve in various roles with the department, but was ready to hand over the white helmet.
Terry was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in law Scott Hoffman
Terry is survived by his children Chad (Stacy) Shafer, Kari (Jeff) Chaffin, and Todd (Leah) Shafer; Sue Gregg and her children Jason Gregg, Tracy (Jason) Lynum, Curt (Tammy) Gregg; his 11 grandchildren Chase & Brayden Shafer, Faith, Trent & Kamryn Shafer, Braden, Jack & Liam Gregg, Kayla, Connor & Carson Lynum; siblings Tim (Mary) Shafer, Tony (Marsha) Shafer, Tom (Bonnie) Shafer, Julie Hoffman, Jane (Bruce) Erickson, Jackie (Barry) Garfield, Jeff (Shelly) Shafer, Joe (Amy) Shafer; nieces and nephews; cousins & friends, especially Toby and Peg Vorlicek; and his brothers & sisters in the fire service.
Honorary bearers are Terry’s grandchildren.  Pallbearers are Terry’s brothers Tim, Tony, Tom, Jeff and Joe, along with Toby Vorlicek and Adam Vorlicek.
Visitation is Thursday, March 2 from 3-8 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Spring Valley and one hour prior to the service on Friday at church.  Funeral mass is Friday, March 3 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church.   Burial is in St Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, El Paso Township, Pierce County, Wisconsin.
