Vernon Ellefson Obituary

Vernon Eugene Ellefson, 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on December 15, 2025, in River Falls, Wisconsin. Born on May 14, 1938, in Galesburg, Illinois, Vern lived a life marked by service, advocacy, and a deep connection to the natural world.

Vern met the love of his life, Nancy (Hanson) Ellefson, in first grade but it wasn’t until later in life at an outdoor social function when he decided that she was the one. They were married on August 18, 1959.

After serving three years in the United States Navy, as Chief Petty Officer aboard the USS Valley Forge where he led the ship’s firefighting crew—Vern pursued higher education with characteristic determination. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin–River Falls in 1965 with a degree in Biology and Physical Education.

Vern dedicated much of his professional life to education and labor advocacy. He was an active member of the Ellsworth Education Association and served as its head negotiator for an impressive 17 years. His commitment to fairness and justice extended far beyond the classroom; whether championing teachers’ rights or standing up for fellow residents at his assisted living facility, Vern was known for speaking out on behalf of those who couldn’t speak for themselves. He never shied away from a challenge if it meant helping others.

Outside of his professional and advocacy work, Vern found joy in the great outdoors. An avid hunter and fisherman, he was a proud member of Wildlife Forever and The North American Fishing Club. These passions reflected his lifelong appreciation for nature’s beauty and bounty.

A man of strong convictions and a generous heart, Vern’s tough exterior was balanced by his huge laugh, big smile and sarcastic sense of humor. His larger-than-life presence and strong moral compass were ever present, whether it be as a coach, a teacher, or a sharer of his wisdom. Vern will always be remembered for giving the best hugs.

Vern’s legacy lives on through his family: his children Niccola (Kerwin) McClung, Lisa Schwartzbauer, and Mike (Corrie) Ellefson; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. He is also survived by his brothers Eddie Ellefson, Arland (Pat) Ellefson, and sister-in-law Shelby Ellefson.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Nancy Ellefson with whom he spent 65 wonderful years together before she passed in September of 2024, his parents, and brothers Tommy Ellefson and Randy Ellefson.

A Celebration of Life will be held to honor Vern’s life and legacy. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him. The Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday May 16, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Ellsworth Rod and Gun Club 3930 WI-72.
